The vast belt of grassland called the Asian steppe, or the Eurasian steeppe was divided into eastern and western steppe. This steppe serves as a trade route that connects east and west Asia. The Mongols originated in the Eastern Steppe of Asia, or present day Mongolia.
Mongols were nomadic people, basically pastoralists which meant they herded domesticated animals and were constantly on the move looking for good grassland to feed their animals then returned to their main campsite every now and then. They frequently swept their neighbours to plunder, loot and conquer. Sometimes they even fought over land.
Mongols lived on horseback following and guiding their animals which they lived off of too, depending on them for food, clothing, and housing. Their food was mostly meat and milk from their herds, clothing was made of skin and wool, and they lived on portable felt tents called yurts.

Mongols traveled together on groups called clans. Members of clans often assured they descended from a common ancestor. Most of the times clans joined and became more powerful to raid same enemies. They often met other nomads and traded for scarce items they needed such as grain, metal, cloth, tea and sometimes even their own horses. Due to frequently being on the move, Mongols were accustomed to scarcity and hardship which was probably the reason why they had ambitions to expand or gain wealth. Mongols prided themselves on their strength when battling, and due to their strong habit of raiding, settled societies lived in constant fear of being attacked.
Mongols as well as many societies sought glory , wealth, and expansion that came as a result of conquering powerful empires. For centuries Mongols roamed the Eastern steppe in loosely organised clans constantly on the move raiding, expanding, practicing and applying their skill on horseback when fighting other empires, and becoming powerful.
